Indie Authors Association Insider - May 2023
The SCARS anthology is available now on Amazon. Proceeds donated to NAMI.org and 988lifeline.org.
Greetings Indie Authors,
Welcome new subscribers C. Daley, Electron Yue, Heather Parker, J Rose Black, Kia Niambi, Mahan Tavakoli, Philip Duncan, Terry Freedman, and Vito Potenza! I hope you get to know some fellow writers here and enjoy discovering indie author events and opportunities.
Special thanks to Bernard Kodjo of Libro Layout for recommending the Indie Authors Association Insider!
Thanks also to the SCARS contributing authors and those who took time from their busy lives to attend the book launch in person at Minnetrista or virtually via Zoom, including: Bryan Franco, Colleen Wells, Chuck Kellum, Jessica Grissom, Karuna Mistry, Owen Tungate, Stacy Savage, and William Lewis.
Special thanks to Minnetrista for sponsoring the book launch event and representatives from the Muncie Chapter of the National Alliance of Mental Illness. We raised $150 to donate to them at the book launch and will continue to donate as we receive proceeds from the SCARS anthology.
BOOK MARKETING INSIGHTS
Where do you find out about the books you purchase? I have been paying attention lately to what leads me to buy another book to add to my collection that will take beyond my lifetime to read.
Book recommendation from a friend, mostly through their social media posts.
BookBub - Can’t pass up those dollar deals!
Podcast Interviews - Very popular and effective method of book marketing.
YouTube - Random videos in the “We think you will like this” algorithm.
Amazon Bestsellers - I check the list every day!
Email - From authors I have subscribed to receive email updates.
Have you found success using these book marketing methods? Let’s talk about it on Substack Notes.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Contributing to anthologies associated with a good cause is my favorite way to share my writing gift. As an indie author, it also makes sense from a marketing perspective to let readers know about other projects through the bio that is published in the book. Win. win.
Stacy Savage, who helped with the SCARS anthology, is working on her next project about nature to benefit two nonprofit organizations. Details follow. For more info, visit Poetry Contests for a Cause or email echoesofthewild@yahoo.com.
“Submissions are now being accepted for "Echoes of the Wild: Nature Poetry".
To submit, send up to three poems about nature, no longer than 40 lines each (line limit includes stanza breaks), in one Word document or in the body of an email to: echoesofthewild@yahoo.com.
The editor is seeking work that shows an appreciation for nature in a positive and poetic way. No profanity please. Submissions by those under 18 years of age are acceptable but if the minor’s work is accepted for publication, a parent must sign and email a statement of permission for their child’s work to be published.
Previously published poems are acceptable.
Please include a short bio with your submission. If you are a minor, please include your age with your submission and bio.
The deadline for submissions is August 15, 2023. Expected publication is Fall 2023.
The proceeds from the book will go to two organizations: Red-tail Land Conservancy and Christian Outdoor Ministry Experience. Complimentary copies will not be given to contributors since the proceeds will be going to the two organizations, but copies will be available for purchase at a very reasonable price.
Red-tail Land Conservancy’s mission is “to preserve, protect, and restore natural areas and farm land in east central Indiana while increasing awareness of our natural heritage.”
Christian Outdoor Ministry Experience’s mission is ‘to teach our youth to be responsible stewards of our natural resources, ethical sportsmen, and instill a deep appreciation for the beauty and wonder of all of God’s creations.’”
