Kathy Marcuson, a native of Indiana and history teacher, created Explore Indiana to help her grandchildren and students learn more about Indiana. Her hope is that readers feel her enthusiasm for Indiana and are encouraged to visit more places in the state. She said the most difficult part of publishing this book was getting permission to use all the photos in the book. “The waiting was challenging!”

What is your favorite genre to read and write?
I like writing for elementary and middle school students. I've tried both fiction and nonfiction, and I think I'll continue with both.
What is your writing routine?
I'm a night owl, so I usually write after 9 PM.
How do you handle writer's block?
When I'm feeling stuck, I read other people's books until I get some inspiration.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a children's activity book to go with "The Beauty School Adventure of Mrs. Claus," which I wrote last year. My illustrator is from Italy, and I'll use some of her pictures again since I paid for all the legal rights.
If you could do a book signing anywhere in the world, where would it be?
It would be amazing to do a book signing in Rimini, Italy, with my illustrator Daniela Arlotti. My dream travel destination, though, is London, England. I'm a bit obsessed with the Royals!
Where is the most exciting or unusual place you promoted your book?
I've done signings at the Indiana Historical Society, Fisher's Author Fair, and Carmel Author Fair. I also did a signing at my hometown library in Elwood, Indiana. Seeing all of my hometown friends buying my book was probably the most exciting so far.
What advice do you have for aspiring authors?
You are never too old to start writing.
What do you love about being an author?
The excitement of creating and writing.
What do you dislike about being an author?
Trying to promote my own books and make others aware of them.
What has helped you sell the most books?
Selling online on Amazon and selling in my hometown.
What is the most valuable lesson you've learned as an author?
I wish I had studied more about Amazon's instructions for uploading your own book ahead of time. I get "margin phobia" when I'm on Amazon!
What is your favorite quote?
A quote by Mother Teresa: "I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.”
Where can we find you online?
You can find me on my author page, Facebook, and Instagram.
Is there anything else you want to share?
I'm an extrovert and love talking about my books…and lots of other things!
